Qigong in Pittsburgh

Qigong, pronounced, chee-gung,  (also spelled Chi Kung) has been practiced in China for at least 4,000 years and some say up to 8,000 years.  Qi (pronounced "chee") means energy or “life energy”. Gong means "to cultivate" or "to work with". When the two words are combined it means to cultivate or work with the life energy to improve your health and provide a sense of well-being.

Qigong is a practice that was developed in ancient China much earlier than Tai Chi.  It involves slow and easy movements of the body in coordination with the breath and is accompanied by a focused, meditative mind.  Medical studies have shown that practicing Qigong can lead to improved balance, increased flexibility, relief from high blood pressure, relief of some of the symptoms associated with Parkinson's Disease, pain relief from arthritis and fibromyalgia, reduced stress, depression and anxiety, improved posture, better circulation, better sleep patterns, and an increased overall sense of well-being.

Our Qigong classes usually involve less lower body movement than tai chi and can provide similar health benefits to those that are often associated with tai chi. Another significant difference between Tai Chi and Qigong is that when participating in the Qigong classes, a person does not have to memorize the movements from one week to the next.  Although both Tai Chi and Qigong can be practiced seated, Qigong is somewhat easier to practice seated in a chair if that is your preference.
